Why hire a career coach?
It’s a valid question, and one that you’ll have to answer for yourself to make sure it’s the right decision for you. There are, after all, plenty of free resources out there that you can utilize. And for some people, those are enough. But many other people find that having a guide in the process to help them navigate is what has made the difference. People who work with me typically decide to do so for one of the following reasons. They:
- Know they are unfulfilled with their current job but need help identifying what line of work would be more aligned with their interests
- Are recently out of work unexpectedly and don’t know where to begin
- Have been using resources and conducting their job search on their own with no results
- Are a recent graduate or are approaching graduation and want the best expert tips on entering the job market
While I work with a variety of clients, I specialize in partnering with mid-career transitioners, recent college graduates and international students.
So, what exactly is career coaching?
Every career coach is different. And each client’s needs are unique. Sometimes people hire a coach because they have a very specific need (ie: updating their resume or crafting a cover letter). But more often than not, if you choose to partner with me, you are looking for a guide in a larger process to help you find employment that aligns with what you’re passionate about. To do this, I’ve created a multi-step process that consists of:
The first step to any successful plan is knowing what you want. One of the most common things I hear from clients is that they know they need to make a change, but they don’t know what that change is. I get it, it’s overwhelming. And here’s where I can help. I’ll work with you to have you get clear on your passions and what you like to do. I use a variety of tools to help you better understand your values and what matters to you, among them the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). From there, we’ll work together to explore how to turn these passions into a clear career path.
Resume Preparation/Online Brand Presence
Once you are clear on what you want, the next step is to brand yourself toward that target. As a former advertising professional and recruiter, I have a unique understanding of how best to brand clients toward what hiring managers are seeking. This includes your social media presence. And, as a certified professional resume writer through the Professional Association of Resume Writers/Career Coaches, I stay up to date on the latest resume writing trends to coach you in crafting the strongest document possible.
We’ve all heard how important networking is. In fact, it’s been said that 80% of jobs today are found by networking. So, okay, it’s crucial, but what does it actually mean? I’ll work closely with you to create a strategy for conducting informational interviews with people in industries and roles you’re targeting, so that when your dream positions open up, the right people will already have you on their radar.
Interview Preparation/Salary Negotiation
Thoroughly preparing for the interview for your dream job may be one of the most important things you can do. Not to mention the most nerve-wracking. What questions should you expect? How do you best tell your story? What is the best way to show your value without coming across like you’re bragging? And perhaps the biggest one of all: How do you make sure you know – and can advocate for – what you’re worth financially? I’ll work with you to make sure you feel confident about your story, and conduct mock interviews with you based on the positions you’re targeting to ensure you’re feeling confident come the big day.
